LDOE Family Literacy Engagement Resources
Literacy Resources for Louisiana Families
Ensuring all student have access to quality literacy instruction aligned to the Science of Reading is one of Louisiana's education priorities. Families play an essential role in the literacy development of children at all ages and stages. We want to provide every student with the opportunities they need to master foundational literacy skills. The Louisiana Department of Education has free resources available to help parents support their child's reading journey.
“Literacy” means the ability to read and write, but it includes many other skills including spelling, speaking, and comprehending. Literacy is not just limited to English Language Arts classrooms. Strong literacy skills are needed to succeed in reading and understanding math problems, social studies and science lessons, and directions on any task or activity.
Building Literacy Skills at Home
It is never too early (or late) to start doing literacy activities with your child. Strong literacy skills are essential for development and provide a foundation for school and work performance, social skills, and solving problems in all subject areas. Just a few minutes spent each day on simple literacy activities can add up to a lifelong love of reading and learning! Available in multiple languages, these literacy-based activities are available for all ages.
Grab and Go Activities
Created by our literacy experts at the Louisiana Department of Education, each activity sheet comes with a list of materials, steps, and even a little something extra to help parents support their child's reading journey. Activities are available for a variety of ages and grade levels.
